Meet The Artists ‘12: Ava Duvernay

Please take the time to familiarize yourself if you haven’t already. Ava Duvernay is a filmmaker whom I had the pleasure of meeting last year. A friend of mine asked me to film the premiere of the movie, “I Will Follow.” He clearly stated that there was no budget to pay me, but it would be an amazing opportunity to meet the director. Because I was self-employed, carless and living 16 miles away from the venue at the time, my first inclination was to decline. On the other hand, I was taught to never turn down an opportunity of any kind (within reason, of course). Gladly, I chose the latter.

As an aspiring filmmaker, I respect and salute Ava. Her movie entitled, “Middle of Nowhere” was accepted into Sundance ‘12. If you know anything about Sundance, you know that is an amazing feat. Over 3000 movies are submitted into Sundance yearly and to be one of the selected few to premier in Salt Lake City is quite the honor.

Congrats to Ava on her directorial success. This is only the beginning and I’m certain you know it as well.

Be well.

You’re only as good as the last piece of work you’ve put out.

For all of you Video DSLR shooters out there, I’m letting go of my “Rode VideoMic” for $90 o.b.o. (retail $150). It has served me well for the short time that I did use it but it’s been collecting a copious amount of dust since I’ve upgraded to an H4N a while ago.
If you’re interested, drop a line in the “Ask” section above, mention me on Twitter (@AceKnuckles) or email me (DirtyKnuckles@Gmail.com). I’ll probably have more photo/video equipment to go in the days to come.

This amalgamation of vets and new talent will make for an amazing piece of cinematography. Not to take away anything or say that the original “Tuskegee Airmen” movie didn’t do a stand up job years back, I’m glad that we’re in an age where we have more advanced technology to further tell the story and go more in-depth, with more explosive effects. I LOVE effects!

I tip my hat to Lucas Films and everyone involved for being behind this project. Don’t let us down! If you haven’t watched the trailer, do so now!

Be well.

Jonathan Mannion owns a plot of land on my list of most influential photographers of this generation.

He reminds me a story I once read:

“A photographer went to a socialite party in New York. As he entered the front door, the host said ‘I love your pictures - they’re wonderful; you must have a fantastic camera.’ He said nothing until the dinner was finished, then: ‘That was a wonderful dinner; you must have a terrific stove.’”

It’s certainly NOT the tool; it’s the eye and the vision that you see through that eye. As a photographer, one thing that I’ve learned is that you obtain the perfect photo by the connection that you have with your subject… not your camera.

Be well.
